What readers are saying about Julie Miller books:
|
|
 |
"I have purchased and read all your
books and I've never been disappointed. I love them all. I've grown
to love the Kinkaids and the Taylors as well as the Cartwrights."
-- Barbara (via email) |
|
 |
"Love
your Taylor/Precinct series and Debra Webb’s Colby Agency series best of
all the Intrigue books. And Harlequin Intrigue is my favorite of all the
Harlequin imprints.Waiting for you to write a story about the desk
Sargeant." -- Kathy, Florida |
|
 |
"I love Harlequin Intrigues. You get
romance, suspense and lots of action in one book. A wonderful
package. Some authors' books I have enjoyed are: Jessica Andersen,
Delores Fossen , Susan Kearney, Dana Marton, and Rebecca York."--Crystal,
Kentucky |
|
 |
"I had to take a moment to tell you how
much I love and adore your books for Harlequin the latest book I am
reading is Armed and Devastating HOLY MOLEY Atticus is well yummy and
Brooke is so appealing I love she is mousy and shy and you are making
her come out of her shell and help Atticus I can't wait to finish the
book and look forward to if you are going to write further stories on
the other 2 brothers remaining Edward who just seems so dark and
mysterious and Holden who seems lighter of heart. Thank you for your
great stories on heroes in the military, police, firemen and the women
who love them EGADS gotta get back to work but had to email you." --
Mary, Arizona |
|
 |
"I just had to write to tell you that I
absolutely love your books. I've read your books off and on in the past
and then got into the Brotherhood of the Badge books last year. I just
wish you could write one for every month. I usually don't email
authors, but I just had to tell you this. I can't wait for the next
books to come out, just wish I didn't have to wait so long. I'm so
impatient!!!" -- Denise B., via e-mail |

 |
re: Taylor Clan "I am
writing to let you how much I love the Taylors. They all are so
wonderful. I especially love the breakfasts they all have together. It
reminds me of when all my family had Christmas together. I am an only
child and I can't realize what it would be to have so many brothers."
|
|
|
"I recently read "Beauty and the Badge" and
"Takedown", and then I re-read them--twice! I'm going to hate having to
return them to my library. I loved the earlier books in the series about
the Kincaid brothers, but I think "Takedown" is the best one yet.
Captain Cutler was such a wonderful character. His protectiveness made
me want to swoon... I can't even put my feelings into words.
I'm definitely looking forward to the S.W.A.T. books! Keep up the good
work!"--Karen (via email)
|
|
|
"I want to thank you for the wonderful
books you write for the Intrigue and Blaze imprints. I've
discovered--and devoured--your
USMC heroes' stories. They are truly a representation of the trials and
rewards experienced by military personnel and their spouses/significant
others. If all Marines were as hunky in or out of their uniforms as
Ethan, Travis, and Zach--there wouldn't be a single Marine left. They'd
all be spoken for!I also have
really enjoyed your series with the KCPD characters. You have done an
admirable job of making each and every character separate and special.
So many authors seem to have cookie cutter characters--same type of
hero, same type of heroine, yadda, yadda, yadda. But you have never let
your readers and fans down in that area. I consider each and every one
of your books to be keepers." |

Re:
ARMED AND DEVASTATING |
|
|
"I have read and loved a lot of your
books--but I think this one is my favorite!" -- Ellen, Nebraska
|
|
|
"I read it from cover to cover in one
sitting--I loved it!" -- Carolyn, Georgia |
|
|
"I haven't yet read Protective Instincts
because the print book isn't here yet, but I couldn't resist the ebook
version. I loved Atticus and Brooke, loved the romance and loved the
intrigue which was subtly done. I think I know who the baddie is, so
I'll have to buy and read the rest of the series to make sure. I'm
really looking forward to Edward's story but knowing my luck that'll be
the last book – those are always the ones I want most from the very
start!"--Sadhbh, eHarlequin.com 100,000 Book Challenge
|
|
|
"I love this series! First the Taylors, now
the Kincaids - strong, dependable, hunky men with badges! Is it getting
hot in here? Suspenseful - who's the stalker? Sad - who would want to
kill John Kincaid? Happy - Now Brooke knows dreams do come true! Only
one BAD thing - we have to wait for October for the next brother's
story!"--Lynn, eHarlequin 100,000 book blog |

Re:
AT YOUR COMMAND |
|
|
"I'm a regular reader of Blaze books and
I've read other stories by you, but this one, At Your Command, is the
first one to make me stop and take the time to tell you how much I
enjoyed it. As a mom of a former marine I always look at military heroes
with a critical eye, but I have nothing but praise for this latest one.
Both Zachariah and Becky are two of the most interesting and 'real'
characters I've seen in a while. Not to mention the hottest. *g* You
don't always find such depth in a Blaze book and I appreciate it when I
find it. So thank you for that. And as a bonus I left a little review on
Amazon. I just hope someone reads it and makes a point to get this book.
They won't be disappointed."--Chris, Kentucky (via e-mail)
|
|
|
"Just finished At Your Command. LOVED IT!
Zach is not only sizzling hot on a physical level, but you can't help
but be attracted to him for his ethics, morals, honor and good ol' boy
attitude. You Rock!"--Sherry, Nebraska (via e-mail)

"I just had to write you and let you know
how much I enjoyed this book. I didn't just enjoy it -- I was blown away
by it. ...Yesterday, after finishing another book I had no idea what to
read...(mind you my TBR pile is a TBR room), my eyes were drawn to this
book, so I decided to pick it up and read it. Oh my stars Julie, I could
not put it down. Halfway into the story I stopped and looked up other
books by you and immediately ordered Major Attraction and Basic
Training. I love a good story with a man in uniform. Please tell me you
plan on doing a story on Deke and Murphy? ...The sexual tension between
Zachariah and Becky jumped off the pages....in fact the pages sizzled
with the heat between them. And Lily....what a delightful character.
This is the first book that I read by you but let me tell you --- it
won't be my last."--Danielle, Illinois (via e-mail)

"I Loved It. This is by far the “smartest”
Blaze I have ever read! I couldn’t go to sleep until I finished it. I
have read all of the Taylor Clan and the Precinct Series and loved them,
but this is your finest by far. All the pieces were there. The characters
were flawlessly drawn (I want to be able to play with a body like his).
He didn’t do anything stupid. She had good reasons for her actions.
Everything was reasonably and well thought out. The villain was
believable. You give an insight into what our troops and families must
be going thru at this time. Brilliant! I hope you get the notice and the
awards you deserve."--Julie, Texas (via e-mail)

"I happily pulled this one off the keeper
shelf and did a re-read for this months mini-challenge. If a marine
isn't uniformly hot I don't know who would be!...Honestly, if you
haven't read this book it is worth taking the time to track it down. If
I could give it another *heart* I would. Julie Miller deserves six
hearts for this spectacular book!" --jillyan77 (eHarlequin.com

Re: BEAUTY and the BADGE |
|
|
"Awesomeness... I loved how Beth broke down
Kevin's defenses so easily. I think the captain could have used better
words at the end of the book.. Grandma Miriam was my favorite character
even though we didn't get to hear from her to often. She seemed like a
sweet little old lady. I completely forgot about the black mailer in
this book until they were mentioned. In this book you have murder,
assault, blackmail, conspiracy, and altered lab results. Great read."---Jessiecue

|
5 STARS!!!!! My Review: "I loved this
story! It has tons of mystery, and tons of romance.
When the mystery was finally solved, I sat there thinking "huh... didn't
think of that."
I REALLY LOVED IT! This is staying on my shelf! Recommend it to
EVERYONE!" --Dorthy (eHarlequin.com 100,000 Book Challenge) |

Great job."--Barbara, PA |

"Julie - read Beauty
and the Badge and loved it. Couldn't put it down."--Nit on eHQ
|
|
|
"My Opinion: An excellent who-done-it. Beth
Rogers (Beauty) was the girl-next-door, sweet, caring and trouble. As
far as Detective Kevin Grove (Beast) is concerned, he’s closed off his
heart to women, romance and love, except for his grandmother, Miriam.
Kevin has trouble trusting another woman after the last one he dated. It
was a disaster and he had been used and he didn’t like the feeling.
Kevin feels due to his ugly face and his height and build that no one
really wants him. Will Beth convince Kevin to give love another try."--Bookfuff

"Just finished reading "B & B" a little
while ago, and wanted to let you know that I loved it! A great ending
to The Precinct series, though I would have loved for it to go on and
on. Oh, those Alpha-male cops--SIGH! Looking forward to whatever comes
next."--Karen (via email) |

Re: BROTHERHOOD of the BADGE
mini-series |
|
 |
"Yay! I was hoping (Holly) would be the
main character in the last Kincaid book and I cannot wait to see how
she'll handle Edward. He's becoming my favorite character in this series
even though he has very little mention in the two books that are out
now. But the things that you hint at about his past and his character
kind of gives him a special place in my heart. I'm anxiously awaiting
for him to finally be happy after whatever tragedy he went through. I'm
so rooting for him! ... Anyway, Sawyer's and Atticus's stories' were
great!!!! I just finished reading them, back to back. Now I'm kinda of
wishing I would have waited until the last two came out so that I could
read all four in a row instead of waiting three months to read the
others. Oh well. I never have been a patient person. Now I have to play
the waiting the game. Like I've siad before, keep doin' what you're doin'
girl!!!"--Monica, via e-mail |

"I haven't been able to put them down!"

I finished reading Kansas City Christmas
earlier today and I thought it was an amazing story! I swear I got teary
eyed whenever Edward would think of his daughter, you always do know how
to tug at the heart strings. It was such a sweet story. I'm glad he
finally got his happy ending along with
Holly.............question...will Jillian ever get her own story?"
(The answer is "Yes!")--Monica, via email |
|
 |
"I just had to let you know how much I have
enjoyed the brotherhood of the badge series. I loved all of the four
brothers, and I felt sad as I finished reading Edward's story. I wished
there had been more brothers.
Your books are an automatic buy for me, so I cannot wait for your next
release." -- Audrey, the UK |
|
 |
"I just wanted to say thank you for
creating another memorable series with Brotherhood of the Badge. Each
book was fabulous and I hated to put them down. I can't decide which was
my favorite, but I do believe that Edward was my favorite brother.
Something about a strong, wounded man always grabs my heart. Thank you
for giving Holly her own story. I think she deserved it and she and
Edward are perfect for each other. I'll look forward to Detective Kevin
Grove's story. It will be interesting to see who you have him match wits
with." -- Latesha, via email |

"Let's reflect on those wonderful books we
read this year. What was your favorite Romantic Suspense? What made it
outstanding to you?
My favorite Harlequin Intrigues are the four wonderful books in Julie
Miller's THE PRECINCT
PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS
ARMED AND DEVESTATING
PRIVATE S.W.A.T TAKEOVER
KANSAS CITY CHRISTMAS
I love each of these books and found each one to be well-written;
perfect examples of the Intrique line. Often in series, one or two of
the books may not be as strong as the others, but Ms. Miller's maintains
an excellence that made each of these books difficult to put down.
Wonderful characters, tension-filled plots and great romance." --

"I recently finished the four books of "The
Precinct" series, and I just had to write and tell you how much I
enjoyed them. Strangely, I read (and immediately reread) the fourth book
first, and it is still my favorite. And then when I was done with the
first three books, I read it again!! I loved all the Kincaid men--each
had his own attraction for me--but I liked Edward best. I seem to be
drawn to "alpha" males, both in real life and in the books I read, and
he is certainly a good example. His losses and isolation were so
painful, and so achingly real. My second favorite brother was Atticus; I
could really understand Brooke's attraction to him. As far as I'm
concerned, he was the most handsome of the brothers, at least if the
picture on the cover is any indication. Be still my heart! :-) I think
the brothers personified what is wonderful about men in general, and
policemen in particular. They were definitely cast in the "serve and
protect" mold, and showed the brotherhood aspect of it, too." --

Re: FORBIDDEN CAPTOR |
|
|
"Julie Miller does more for romance than
I’d have thought possible. Even in dark and dangerous situations we are
given the belief and hope that love really can grow despite whatever
evil surrounds us and that love really does triumph. This is what a
romance story should all be about ~ and Julie Miller does it fabulously.
|
|
|
I really, really like both Bryce and Tasiya ~ two people that have
learned to do what must be done to survive. And yet neither has been
destroyed by the pain and evil around them. What a wonderful story and
even though it's part of a mulit-author series, it stands alone just
fine. VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!"--Kathy, Canada

"Since the first book I've ever read of
yours, Forbidden Captor, I have been a huge fan of your
writing. Forbidden Captor is one of my all time favorite books and
Bryce Martin is a wonderful hero, I just loved him!!! I've read all
of your books (except for The Ladies of Ladytech books) and I
can never get enough of them. I was wondering if Holly Masterson
will be getting her own story? I love the story you wrote for her
brother and I was kind of hoping that she would have her own happily
ever after, too. Anyhoo...take care and keep on doin' what you're
doin', girl!" -- Monica, via e-mail |

"5 stars ~ This is absolutely one of my
favourite stories in this series or by Julie Miller... and Julie Miller
and her books are among my top level keepers. Definitely a "Beauty and
the Beast" theme, which is probably my all-time best-loved fairytale,
and Julie Miller did a fabulous job translating it to modern day.
Beautiful, beautiful story... and one that I was all too happy to
re-read."--Kathy (eHarlequin.com 100,000 Book Challenge)

"This book is the third installment of the
Big Sky Bounty Hunters series. I loved it the first time I read it and
decided to revisit it! When a mission goes wrong bounty hunter Bryce
Martin and his team become the hostages of a mad militia leader. Martin
falls for servant Anastasia Belon and realizes that he will do anything
to keep her safe, however knowing that his men and his mission come
first. This book was great it almost felt like a roller coaster of
suspense, I could not put it down. I loved the character "Anastasia" she
is a meek woman but proves to be fearless."--Intriquelove

about the Kincaid brothers I can't recommend them highly enough as the
things that unfold about John Kincaid's past life, and all the people
who come into play in this entire storyline were just fantastic!!!!
There is just so much more I would like to tell about it but don't want

"Like Julie’s story of A. J. Rodriguez,
another of KCPD’s detectives who played a part in many stories before he
got his own, Cooper has been around! And finally getting to his story
rates, to me, as fantastic!! And like A.J.’s story, this turned out to
be one of my favourites in the series. With a definite link to the
previous story ~ Up Against The Wall ~ the story still stands on it’s
own very well. And the attraction between Cooper and Sarah is
pyrotechnic, while it is also a beautiful love story. I truly cannot say
enough wonderful things about the author, Julie Miller, and her series’
~ The Taylor Clan, The Precinct and now The Precinct: Vice Squad ~ all
of which are wonderfully related. I truly enjoy the inter-connectedness
of series like this and I really hope that there is a lot more to come!!
VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

And I really have to give Margie a huge
thanks for blogging about this book; she’s the one that got me started

"I think it was one of your best books I
read. Don't get me wrong, all the other books you wrote about the

others you wrote. I didn't want to put it down it was so good." --

Re:
OUT OF CONTROL |
|
|
"I love what Julie Miller has created in
Out of Control. The heroine is a woman who covers all of the emotions.
She can be tender and maybe even a little naïve but she is feisty,
strong, smart and determined. We get to experience her coming to her own
sense of awareness in who she is as a person and especially, who she is
as a woman. The hero is a man of great integrity. He could have easily
taken great advantage of a very, sexually inexperienced woman but his
feelings took control and their journey is sweet and yet incredibly
sizzling." --Lori (Once
Upon A Romance) |
|
|
"Well, this one certainly lives up to the
“Blaze” standards of sex, more sex and ultimately true love. And the
heroine has a cool profession/trade as well as there being a hot cop
hero."--Jayne. (DearAuthor.com) |
|
|
"Julie Miller gives us another amazing
story to escape with. I love the age difference between Jack and Alex,
there aren't too many stories like this one out there. I think it adds
depth to the story that Alex and Jack do share a past together, only a
few hours, but still it gives them reason to be drawn together seven
months later. It gives them the opportunity to bring those to justice
and to give Jack time to get used to there age difference. The secondary
characters give Alex a past and a history, not too pretty, but one Jack
helps her overcome and get past. The town of Dahlia is easily seen
through the readers eyes, you can see the diner where everyone meets for
dinner, you can see the racetrack, you can see the men and women racing.
But more importantly you can feel the emotions Jack and Alex feel
throughout the story. It's a spectacular read! A must-read for any
Harlequin fan!"--Tonya at FreshFiction.com |
|
|
"Want a romance that intertwines the best
of drag racing and heart pounding love? Then grab a copy of Out of
Control, by Julie Miller. Your heart and adrenaline will race!
She thinks she's an ugly duckling in a man's world. He's trying to catch
the person who killed his partner. Their paths cross on a street in
Nashville for one amazing night and never to cross again... or so they
think. Cars aren't the only thing racing out of control at the Dahlia
Speedway.
I liked that Alex possessed the physical features of a vixen yet she
didn't know that to do with those same attributes. She shows that all
women can be sexy regardless of her status in life. Grease monkeys and
gear heads can be very saucy. I also liked that Jack wasn't a typical
cop/detective. He played by the rules - his own. His take charge
attitude helped smooth over his possessiveness and made him more
likable.
The writing was tight and the descriptions of the speedway made you feel
like you were a real part of the story. I enjoyed every minute of the
journey.
If you want a great summer read, filled with racing heart and racing
cars, then Out of Control if the read for you. I give this novel 4.5
books."--J. Thomas at "The Long and the Short of It Reviews" |

didn't realize it was part of a series, so I'm frantically trying to
find the first two books. Don't suppose I can buy them from you?? (only
kidding). My favorite line in the book was when Holden says to Liza,
"Come on, baby, this is what I do!" OMG that just made my heart swoon
and I fell deeper in love with Holden than I already had been. Does that
sound weird? Anyway, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed

stray that was moaning at the beginning of the first Brotherhood book
when the father died....And I love the hero's names--all literary
characters. And Detective Grove such a nice guy. I could see he was a
good guy when he realized how important those dogs were and wanted to

"I had a weird sense of deja vu reading
this, partly because I read the other one first (Armed and
Devastating) and partly because the characters have been in past
(Precinct) books but I couldn't remember them well (the result of
overreading for school and quick reading for two challenges!). I
really liked Mel's mom and Benjamin and the family involvement in
the book. I'm really curious about the brother, Edward, and look
forward to reading his story." -- RnRMom (eHarlequin 100,000

"Many twists and turns in this one really
kept me on the edge of my seat and completely drew me into this terribly
senseless murder of a fine father and policeman. I am very glad I had
the other 3 books to read so I could continue to the end."--Cheryl,

Re:
PULLING the TRIGGER |
|

4.5 hearts ~ The past, regardless how
painful it was ~ is where you WERE:
Where you ARE is a decision you had to make.
AND
Doing everything by yourself does not mean you're strong:
Real strength comes when you can let others in and let them help.
"These words of wisdom came to me through
Julie Miller's PULLING THE TRIGGER. The second statement was from
something that Ethan said to Joanna. When he was telling her that being
strong is not about having complete control over her life, I felt like
pumping my fist in the air and shouting "YES!"
The first statement came to me towards the end of the story when Joanna
was actually thinking and not trying to just protect herself. I was
quite impressed!
When you can find words of wisdom to live by in a story, you KNOW that
the story is something special.
Once again I am in awe at how complex, how
complete Julie's characters are and how perfectly everything fits
together. Only one of the reasons she remains at the top of my
favourites list."

TAKEDOWN |

"Finished Takedown last night. It was a
grab you by the throat and never let you go book. I was glad that
Jillian finally realized that she was worthy of being loved and could
love someone. I am waiting for the next book in the series.
I did enjoy seeing Edward and Holly and Holden again as well as Shauna
and Eli. It is like see your family and getting caught up with them."--Elaine

"Loved the book! Just finished this
morning. The story of Edward and Holly is one of my favorites, so it was
great to see what happened to "little sister". (Yes, I am the little
sister!)
Thank you for your writing that allows me to escape about the "world"
around me. I am always better grounded after one of your books."--Judy

"Amongst the love story are elements of
danger and mystery. Ms. Miller weaves it together and makes a compelling
story. Who is stalking Jillian and why is he(Michael) attracted to his
sons physical therapist? There is never a dull moment in this book. I
read it through in one setting."--ms. m. (eHarlequin.com Book

". . . and this one is going on the keeper
shelf. Julie, I loved it that your hero was much older than the normal
ages of the H/h. Since I'm too close to 60 (58 if the truth be known)
it is nice to see someone older being portrayed as hot and sexy and
Michael was definitely that."--Mme Kathy (eharlequin.com) |

"Another great story from Julie Miller.
Exactly why she's an auto-buy for me! I really enjoyed reading Michael
and Jillian's story. Jillian is trying to overcome the guilt she has
over her young, "rebellious" days, but still finds herself coming into
contact with those same people she has run away from. This gets her into
trouble a few times. Michael is out to save her from a madman who is
stalking her. They both have to overcome the age difference and give in
to what they're both feeling. A great read, highly recommended!"--Tracey

"The first word that comes to mind is
satisfying. Yes, Julie Miller's Takedown has everything a great book
should, including sizzling lovemaking. You read it right, a Harlequin
Intrigue with passionate scenes and unexpected hot kisses. A perfectly
threaded blend of romance and suspense, featuring a convoluted villain
who kept everyone (including me) exhilarated until the very end.
I must confess, I fell in love with Captain
Michael Cutler at first read, it’s hard to say which part of him I like
more, but I’ll try. Maybe is the way he wears his KCPD uniform, his age
(he is in his early forty) so tasty mature, with salt-and-pepper hair
and dark blue eyes, his height (I have a thing for tall men) and of
course, Michael’s kisses! Next time I have to give an example of a great
alpha, he will be mine. Oops! I forgot to mention he is a hero, a real
one, he leads a SWAT team with Spartan discipline...
For the ones of us targeting HI this is a
must read, it has every element we were told a HI book should have, and
much more. I learned a few techniques just reading this book, more fun
than any workshop."--Joanna (eHarlequin.com) |

Interrogation Questions for Julie Miller…
|
| |
Do all of your Precinct/Vice
Squad/Brotherhood of the Badge books need to be read in order?
In answer to your
question, technically, no, you don't have to read my Precinct books
in any particular order--except for the individual miniseries, Vice
Squad, Brotherhood of the Badge and my upcoming S.W.A.T. TEAM 1
stories, they are stand-alone books. The miniseries I just mentioned
do share an overall villain/story arc among the 2-4 books, as well
as the individual mysteries/romances, though, and probably should be
read in order so that you don't get a clue that gives something away
in an earlier book.
That said, I would read the Vice Squad books before I read the
Brotherhood of the Badge books, mostly because a couple of important
characters in the Brotherhood books (including a hero and a villain)
are introduced as supporting characters in the Vice Squad books.
If you've read my books, you know that I've created a community of
characters who work in Kansas City's fictional Fourth Precinct.
While anything labeled "The Precinct" is a stand-alone book, many
readers enjoy reading them in order, simply because they get to know
supporting characters who sometimes go on to become future
heroes/heroines, or they meet characters who have already had a
featured role as hero/ine and are now in supporting roles. They
enjoy watching characters come into their own in one book, shine as
a hero/ine in another, and then revisit them to see how their lives
together are progressing in subsequent stories. But not every
character appears in every book, of course, and the storylines do
not cross over.
If you go to the Book
List on my website it lists all of my Precinct books in
the order of their release.
Again, thanks for writing. Enjoy the books!

What promotional tools do you
use and recommend?
Absolutely the best promotional advice I've
received over the years (and I try to live by it) is to write the
very best book you can write. A great story told with a unique
personal voice will generate sales through word of mouth so that new
readers will check you out. And, writing a great story will keep
loyal readers coming back for more. Beyond that, I've tried several
things--some work better for me than others in terms of time, budget
and skill demands vs. the rewards. In this electronic day in age, I
think having a website is a must--and updating it on a regular basis
is also a must. It's probably the easiest way to get information
about me and my books out there. Basically, promotion is all about
communication--meeting readers and potential readers. So I
participate in group websites (Intrigue Authors, Blaze Authors). I
frequent favorite sites and boards (eHarlequin.com, Cataromance.com,
RomanticTimes.com), which can be a fun break for me as well. I take
part in blogs (my own on eHarlequin, Intrigue Authors blog, guesting
on other blogs such as Pink Hearts or Sherry James' blog). I do
chats on NovelTalk and eHarlequin. I present workshops at local,
regional and national conferences. I do booksignings (those give me
a chance to meet readers, but, just as importantly, give me the
chance to develop relationships with booksellers and librarians who
will, in turn, promote my books). I'll write an occasional
newsletter article. And I hold seasonal book giveaway
contests--sometimes I give away a current book, sometimes the prize
is a backlist title that's hard to get. Every effort is a way to
connect with readers--to draw them in and reward them with a great
read!

How much research do you do for
your books?
I don't sit down and do research per se.
But I'm somebody who likes to learn new things every day--so I read,
I travel, I listen to people who have interesting jobs, I attend
workshops and classes, etc. I internalize all kinds of information
(I'm pretty darned good at Trivial Pursuit <g>) and then draw from
that when I'm putting together story ideas, creating characters and
writing books. I've had a variety of jobs over the years that have
put me in contact with experts in many different fields--and those
friendships and acquaintances have remained valuable contacts to
consult when I need info from a Marine or attorney or trauma nurse
or undercover detective or DEA agent, etc. for a story. I'm much
more likely to stop and look up or verify a detail as I'm writing
than I am to look up information before I start a book (that'd feel
too much like writing a research paper!--and I did plenty of those
in college <g>). |

Why Kansas City for your Precinct stories?
K.C. is old stomping ground territory for me. I used to live in
the Kansas City area. My parents grew up there and I still have lots
of family there, so I visit often. It’s not just following that old
adage about “write what you know,” though that firsthand knowledge
certainly gives my Precinct books an authentic feel, I think. I just
love the look and feel of Kansas City. It’s a metropolitan mecca
with all the history, neighborhoods, culture, opportunities and
cross-section of life that any other big city has. Yet as modern as
it can be, K.C. still has that laid-back, Midwestern feel that
really seems to suit my tastes and my writing voice. There is an
endless variety of stories to tell there, numerous settings I can
draw from. Even though I’m writing fiction, the characters and
stories feel more real to me.

Why all the military
heroes? Do you have a military background?
While I've never served in the military myself (asthma tends to
keep one from passing the physical), I come from a military family.
My dad is a veteran Marine, as are my uncle and younger brother. My
younger brother left the Corps after Desert Storm, but was recruited
by the Army in recent years to help train new recruits and
reservists in some of the intricacies of Middle Eastern weaponry and
engineering. His unit has been in Iraq, and is scheduled for
redeployment to another location in 2008. Needless to say, I'm proud
of my family and my country, and have learned a lot about the
military through their experiences and character. They answer my
questions and don't blush too much when I paint the heroes based in
part on them in such a loving, heroic light. I pray for them and for
all the military and their families every day. |
